Embark Website mockups on different devices - award-winning website

Most agency websites look the same, minimal, white and safe and for years, ours was no exception.

So when we rebranded last year, we set ourselves a harder brief than the one we set for most clients. Build a website that refuses to blend in, but still speaks to the established business owners we want to work with and make it the strongest piece of proof we own.

This month, that work was recognised. Our award-winning website took out three categories at the 19th Web Excellence Awards: Branding, Design Agency and Self Promotion. The jury reviewed more than 1,000 entries from 29 countries across five continents, each judged against a strict set of criteria and ours made the cut in all three.

We’re proud of the result, but the reason we’re writing about it isn’t the trophy, it’s that the decisions behind the site are the same ones we’d point any growing business toward.

So here’s what the process taught us, and what you can take from it.

Why an award-winning website starts by refusing to blend in

We’d built one of those forgettable sites ourselves and it was quietly holding us back, it looked tidy, but it didn’t sell the thinking that sets us apart.

So we went the other way, a solid deep blue instead of the default white, generous spacing and a single, confident call to action. A three-dimensional take on our new logo to stop people the moment they land, different for a reason, not different for the sake of it.

The lesson isn’t “use deep blue”. It’s that blending in is a choice and usually the wrong one. I strongly believe that if your website could have your competitor’s logo dropped on it without anyone noticing, it isn’t working hard enough for you.

Strategy comes before decoration

The part we’d point to first isn’t a visual flourish, it’s the thinking underneath it.

Every decision on the site traces back to a commercial job, our Google rating and real client stories sit up top because trust is the first thing a prospect is looking for. The navigation is built around getting someone to the right service in a click or two, because a confused visitor leaves. The insights library is front and centre because education is how we earn trust before a sales conversation ever happens.

None of that is decoration, it’s brand strategy, made visible. A website that looks good but doesn’t move people toward a decision is an expensive brochure.

Your website is proof, not a brochure

Here’s the part we’re proudest of and the part that matters most for you.

The whole site was designed, built and written in-house by our team of five, fitted around live client work. No outside studio, no shortcuts and no big budget. Our senior designer led the design, our developer led the build and I led the strategy, with more than 250 hours between us.

We built it headless, using Astro, WordPress and Vercel. In plain terms, that means the site is fast, secure and built to last, without the heavy, sluggish setup most WordPress sites carry. On Google’s own PageSpeed test, the desktop experience scores 90 for performance, 91 for accessibility and 100 for best practices, with zero layout shift.

We share the detail because it’s the whole point. The strategy, craft and standard that earned these awards are exactly what sits behind the award-winning website design we deliver for clients. If we can do this for ourselves under real-world constraints, we can do it for you.

What an award-winning website does after launch day

We also built the site for how people actually search now, with clean, structured content designed for both Google and the new wave of AI-powered search.

The numbers back it up. Compared with the month before launch, we’re now getting four times the organic clicks and twice the impressions, and our average position in Google has climbed from 21 to 13. Clicks have grown every single month since the new site went live.

Last 30 days compared with the 30 days before launch
Metric Before launch Last 30 days Change
Clicks per day 6.4 26.1 +306%
Impressions per day 1,920 4,020 +109%
Click-through rate 0.34% 0.65% +94%
Average position 21.1 13.0 Up 8 places

One brand architecture article alone has pulled more than 1,000 clicks, and it keeps working while we sleep.

That's the quiet power of doing the foundations properly. A well-built website doesn't just look good on launch day. It compounds, month after month, into a real commercial asset.

Frequently asked questions

What are the Web Excellence Awards?

The Web Excellence Awards are an international awards program recognising outstanding websites, apps and digital campaigns. Entries come from agencies, studios and in-house teams around the world and are assessed by a jury against set judging criteria.

Which Web Excellence Awards did Embark win?

Embark's website won in three categories at the 19th Web Excellence Awards: Branding, Design Agency and Self Promotion.

How is the Embark website built?

The site is built headless. Astro runs the front end, WordPress manages the content and Vercel hosts it. That setup keeps the site fast and secure, and on Google's PageSpeed test the desktop version scores 90 for performance, 91 for accessibility and 100 for best practices.

What makes an award-winning website?

An award-winning website combines a clear strategy with distinctive design. Every element should do a commercial job, from building trust to guiding visitors toward the right service, and the site needs to be fast, accessible and easy to find in both Google and AI-powered search.

How long does it take to build an award-winning website?

It depends on the scope of the site and the strategy work behind it. Our own website took more than 250 hours across design, development and strategy, completed in-house around live client work.

Can Embark build an award-winning website for my business?

Yes. The same strategy-first process that earned our awards is what we use on client projects. You can see how we approach it on our website design services page.
